On Wednesday, 14 October 2026, the Department of Tourism at Ionian University held its Welcome and Orientation Event for first-year students for the 2026–2027 academic year at Amphitheatre 2 in Corfu.
The event provided an opportunity for new students to become acquainted with the Department, its academic and administrative staff, and the opportunities and support services available throughout their studies.
The event opened with a brief welcome address by Professor Konstantinos Artikis, Dean of the School of Economics.
Professor Christina Beneki, Head of the Department of Tourism, then welcomed the new students and presented the Department’s academic profile, mission, vision, and study programme, highlighting the links between university education, current developments, and emerging challenges in the tourism sector.
Focusing on the knowledge and skills required in the rapidly evolving tourism industry, the presentation highlighted the interdisciplinary nature of the study programme and the importance of critical thinking, digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and sustainable tourism development. It also outlined graduates’ career and academic prospects, international mobility opportunities through Erasmus+, and opportunities for students to participate in the Department’s educational, research, and outreach activities.
The event continued with informative presentations on key aspects of student life and academic studies. Assistant Professor Nikolaos Varotsis introduced the role of the Academic Advisor and the undergraduate thesis process, while Assistant Professor Panagiotis Kloutsiniotis provided information on internships and opportunities to gain professional experience during students’ studies.
Assistant Professor Konstantinos Vogklis then addressed the evaluation of the educational process and the electronic services available at Ionian University and the Department of Tourism, explaining how students can participate in teaching evaluations and make use of digital tools that support their studies.
Efrosyni Avgerinou, Acting Head of the Department Secretariat, highlighted the Secretariat’s supportive role throughout students’ studies and the importance of keeping up to date with information published through the Department’s official announcements.
University life is about more than attending lectures. It offers opportunities to acquire knowledge, develop skills, collaborate with others, gain international experience, and actively participate in the academic community. With this message, the Department of Tourism welcomed its new generation of students and wished them a productive and successful academic year.
The Department of Tourism extends its sincere thanks to the Corfu Social Cooperative of Limited Liability (Koi.S.P.E.) “Neoi Orizontes” (New Horizons) for generously sponsoring the refreshments provided to participants during the event.
