Short Description:

The objective of the course is to train students to be able to understand and use everyday expressions and elementary phrases aimed at satisfying tangible and specific needs, to be able to introduce themselves and recommend a third party, to ask questions and give answers about personal information, to be able to communicate simply and effectively.

Objectives - Learning Outcomes:

The objective of this course is to enable students to:

  • communicate simply and effectively.
Syllabus:

We start by  learning the alphabet of German. This introductory course includes the presentation of basic grammatical and linguistic rules, such as the inflection of verbs, pronouns, at different times and persons, degrees of adjectives, main and secondary sentences. In addition, the material of the course focuses on the different types of questions and answers, through the vocabulary learning that is necessary for oral and written communication at the level of everyday life and with emphasis indicatively on Family, Food, work, leisure, etc. Special emphasis is also placed on understanding spoken language, but also on reading texts in German.

Week 1:

"I and others" (alphabet, numbers, greetings and information about personal data – inflection of smooth verbs in the Present Tense)

Week 2:

"People and objects" (family and food vocabulary-definite, indefinite and negative article, possessive pronouns in nominative, interrogative pronouns)

Week 3:

"Student life" (everyday life at the University, vocabulary related to meetings and business appointments – personal pronouns, auxiliary verbs "I have" and "I am" in the partisan)

Week 4:

"Economy meets culture" (work-profession, personal appointments – auxiliary verbs "can-should-want-allowed" in the Present Tense, temporal prepositions)

Week 5:

"Play and fun" (vocabulary related to leisure, hobbies and sports-inflection of irregular verbs in the Present Tense, separated verbs, inflection of smooth verbs in the adjacent)

Week 6:

"Finally a room" (vocabulary of rooms and furniture-inflection of irregular verbs, separated and non-verbs in the adjacent, local determinations)

Week 7:

"Clothes make friends" (vocabulary of clothes, colors and materials-polite type, imperative)

Week 8:

"Hello to Switzerland" (descriptions of streets and sights - use of Present Tense with future meaning, use of prepositions in Dative and accusative)

Week 9:

"A reason to celebrate" (vocabulary of feasts and Customs, invitations and gifts-declension of nouns, personal pronouns in dative, declension of adjectives)

Week 10:

"New work - new city" (house rental and its equipment-comparative and superlative degree of adjectives, prepositions with accusative and dative, possessive pronouns in accusative and dative)

Week 11:

"Neophert in Cologne" (studies abroad, description of experiences – dialects-secondary sentences with "because" and "that", self-suffixed pronouns)

Week 12:

"Coin stories" (conversation with a bank clerk, with a policeman and in commercial stores – minor sentences with "when", partisan of all verbs, verbs drawn with dative)

Week 13:

"Without health nothing happens" (vocabulary of human body members, diseases, dialogue with a doctor and description of symptoms – temporal and causative secondary sentences)

Teaching Methods:

Face-to-face lectures and case study presentations. 

New Technologies:
  • Use of ICTs in Teaching: Using presentation software (power point) in face-to-face lectures, use of asynchronous online learning (uploading educational material on the course’s open eclass platform).
  • Use of ICTs in Communication: Using the open eclass platform (uploading announcements, responding to students’ messages, etc.) and email.
  • Use audio listening material
Evaluation Methods:

Written final examination (100% of grade) which may include:

  • Text meaning and understanding 
  • Multiple choice questions
  • Short answer questions
  • Writing exercises

The assessment of students is accessible to them for explanations regarding their improvement.
