The proposed doctoral dissertation explores an aspect of the cultural heritage of Epirus, focusing on religious monuments of Post-Byzantine era (1453-1830). The research centers on the Municipality of Metsovo, which includes three municipal units and eleven villages, and aims at their primary study, documentation and promotion as a driver for sustainable tourism development in the wider region.
Epirus, although endowed with significant natural and cultural wealth, remains one of the less developed regions of Greece, with many mountainous, isolated and hard to access areas. Within this context, the management of historical monuments, constitutes a complex issue with social, cultural an economic dimensions, as these monuments function simultaneously as active places of worship and as elements of cultural heritage with tourism potential.
