Dr. Sofia Karampela is Associate Professor at the Department of Tourism of the Ionian University (Corfu) and visiting lecturer in the Departments of a. Agricultural Economics and Development, and b. Animal Production Science at the Agricultural University of Athens. She is also a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean (Mytilene), funded by the State Scholarships Foundation (IKY).

She received her undergraduate degree from the Department of Economics and Regional Development at Panteion University, her postgraduate degree from the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program “Planning, Management, and Policy of Tourism” at the University of the Aegean, located at Chios, and completed her doctoral studies at the Department of Geography of the University of the Aegean, located at Lesvos.

She has worked in the private sector as a business and regional development consultant, as well as a researcher in European Union co-funded programs.

Her research interests focus on local and regional development of islands, collaborative networks, participatory tourism planning, and destination sustainability.
